A Love for God in All Things

This week I would like to share a simple yet profound prayer from the Celtic tradition. This little prayer is recorded in the Carmina Gadelica which is a wonderful compilation of Celtic prayers, blessings, and stories assembled by Alexander Carmichael that speak to that Celtic distinctive of seeing God’s work in and through all things. Those poetic and earthy offerings invite us to direct our attention and spirit to matters that matter. We are asked to see all “matter”, in other words every thing, as a manifestation of God’s creativity and dedication to life in all its forms. We are reminded that our family not only includes the other humanoids around us, but all manner of things and experiences. Our relationship with all of Creation in its wildly varied forms is the place within which God meets us and renews our relationship with the Divine Trinity. Christ is everywhere and the imprint of God is upon everything. I hope that this prayer will help you, on this day, to situate yourself within God’s embrace and encourage you to love whole-heartedly.

You are above me O God You are beneath You are in air You are in earth You are beside me. You are within, O God of Heaven you have made your home on earth In the broken body of Creation Kindle within me a love for you in all things.
